No, wait…, the first solo exhibition by WHAT’s Artist in Residence, John Conway, was launched in University Hospital Waterford on 5th March 2015 by performance artist Dominic Thorpe.
John Conway was Artist in Residence with WHAT from July 2014 until March 2015. A graduate of the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, with honours in sculpture, his work has been exhibited and performed in Ireland, Poland, Germany, Romania, Iceland and the United States. He has acted as facilitator and collaborator with various artists and social/community groups and has undertaken residencies in Bucharest and Reykjavik. He served as assistant curator with the Kilkenny Arts Office for six months, before beginning the WHAT residency.
The exhibition contained new work by the artist produced during his residency, including a series of illustrations and watercolours, as well as screen-based work, sculpture and appropriated hospital equipment. A performance at the opening night by the artist was inspired by engagements with patients through the residency and thoughts on palliative care.
