WHAT appointed Kevin O’Shanahan as its first Musician in Residence in 2007. Kevin first worked with WHAT through the European exchange programme, Music in Hospitals in 2006.
Kevin has a vast range of experience of music in community and health settings and is a qualified Psychiatric Nurse. In the 1990s Kevin was the drummer for Waterford-based bands the Freudian Slips and King Kong Company. He featured on a number of recordings and performed around the county. As Director of SPRAOI Drums, he performed and collaborated with musicians throughout Ireland and abroad including the famous Notting Hill Carnival.
He has a special interest in the healing potential inherent in music, and during his 20 week residency with WHAT, he engaged clients of the Waterford Mental Health Services in live music sessions on a weekly basis. This led to the establishment of the WHAT Music in Mental Health Settings Programme.
The evaluation of this residency, Crossing the Line was published in the Journal of the Psychiatric Nurses Association in 2008.
